Community College Northern Inland (CCNI) is proud to announce that Inverell local, Darren Finn, has been named a Learning Ambassador for Adult Learners Week 2025. The honour was announced today by Adult Learning Australia (ALA) CEO, Jenny Macaffer, ahead of the week's official launch on Monday 1 September 2025.

Darren’s journey is a powerful testament to the transformative impact of adult learning. A proud Kamilaroi man from rural NSW, Darren left school early to pursue a sporting career where he enjoyed outstanding success as a World Martial Arts Champion and three-time Australian Boxing Champion. But without formal qualifications, Darren knew that his long-term career options were limited — that's when he decided to study with CCNI and in 2016, completed the Certificate IV in Community Services at Inverell Campus.

That milestone marked the start of a remarkable learning journey with Darren furthering his studies to include the Certificate IV in Fitness (TAFE), Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing and Disability), and Certificate IV in Disability Support. Unsurprisingly, Darren is now working to complete the Diploma of Leadership and Management. He believes that if you lead by example, others will follow, and he plans to use his leadership training to live by his motto.

Today, Darren works as a Jobs Australia Enterprise Manager in his hometown, supporting employment and training opportunities across the New England North West region. He continues to be a visible, approachable role model for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and for all rural and regional learners.

Melanie Squires, CEO of CCNI, congratulated Darren on his achievement:

“Darren embodies the resilience, determination and leadership we see in adult learners across rural NSW. His success demonstrates what is possible when opportunity meets persistence, and we are honoured to have played a role in his journey.”

Adult Learners Week is an annual celebration of lifelong learning, coordinated by Adult Learning Australia, the national voice for adult learning and community education. During the week of celebrations taking place 1-8 September 2025, Learning Ambassadors will share their stories nationally to inspire others to take up new learning opportunities.
