EMPOWERING
OUR COMMUNITIES

Our Impact

The Empowering Our Communities Program

The impact of drought is known to extend well beyond farmers and their families in rural communities.

In 2019, Community College Northern Inland supported its community by offering fee-free places in a range of leisure classes at campuses throughout the region. These places were funded by the Hunter New England and Central Coast Primary Health Network under the Australian Government Empowering Our Communities initiative. The program aimed to give communities the opportunity to tailor mental health responses to local needs in communities struggling with drought.

What our communities said

"What a fabulous class during a hard time. Wonderful to catch up with ladies of the land and see them smile."

Participant—Art class, Barraba Community College

"The course was run by a master of his trade. With his demeanour he was able to instruct us in a manner that was comfortable whilst at the same time clearly demonstrating what was required of us and what we could achieve. Yes, it was good for the soul, and thanks for funding us."

Participant—Kangaroo Hide Whipmaking class, Barraba Community College

"So much fun to learn. Never done this activity—ever! The teacher was just fabulous. Would love to do another."

Participant—Exploring Charcoal Techniques, Inverell Community College
