CHC42021 Certificate IV in Community Services Overview

This qualification reflects the role of community service workers who design and deliver person-centred services to individuals and/or groups. Train to work as a community support worker and enjoy flexibility to work in a range of community services organisations providing services, activities, information and referral for those in need of assistance.

Course Description

Nationally Recognised TrainingThis qualification reflects the role of Community Services workers who design and deliver person-centred services to individuals and/or groups. Workers may provide support, advocacy or interventions to individual clients, groups or communities across a range of services.

At this level, workers may be autonomous with limited responsibility within established parameters and may be required to supervise and lead other works in projects or teams. Work may take place in a range of community services, case workers or case management contexts.

In practice community workers provide services, support, activities, information and referral for those in need of assistance. They link people with appropriate services, groups, communities, and each other.

→ Course Entry Requirements

Course Entry Requirements

All students are required to provide a Unique Student Identifier (USI) number which will be validated by the College. Qualification and/or Statements of Attainment cannot be issued without the USI number.

Outlined are the pre-requisites for student enrolment. Students must:

  • be 15 years or older;
  • participate in a course entry interview to determine their needs and assess suitability;
  • have sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills, for example, to read materials relevant to the course, participate in discussions and observations and apply numerical concepts such as in relation to time management. This will be tested through a LLN assessment as part of the course entry process. Students will need to achieve ACSF Level 2 for reading, writing, numeracy and oral communication to enter the course.
  • provide a current email address for contact and communication.

The specific course entry requirements are:

  • Appropriate LLN skills as required to meet industry documentation requirements;
  • Digital technology skills as required to meet industry requirements;
  • Physical fitness to undertake relevant work roles:
    • Manual Handling;
    • Shift Work;
    • Repetitive tasks;
  • All students will need to obtain a clear Federal Police Check and a Working with Children’s check. Without these documents the student will not be able to attend work placement.

It is recommended that students be currently working in industry.

Course Participation Requirements

As a student studying in a face-to-face learning course, you'll need to attend the compulsory in-campus workshops as part of your training.

  • 1 to 2 days per week during scheduled college semesters; or
  • 2 evenings per week, 3 hours per evening.

The learning program for the CHC42021 Certificate IV in Community Services includes:

  • face-to-face workshops;
  • work carried out online and in the real world, to broaden depth of knowledge or through self-directed research for projects and assignments;
  • written knowledge assessments;
  • research projects.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Students who have completed internal or external training may be able to have these skills acknowledged through recognition of prior learning. This request should take place at the time of enrolment to enable completion of an RPL Application form and issue of the RPL Self-Assessment pack. To receive this qualification, students must complete 7 core units and 8 elective units (15 units in total). The 8 elective units have been chosen to align with industry requirements.

Meet the trainers

Rhonda Mason

Rhonda Mason

Inverell-born mother of four, Rhonda Mason, is passionate about youth and community welfare and services. For more than 20 years Rhonda has worked with Aboriginal, disadvantaged and vulnerable youth, domestic violence victims and the general community in Australia and overseas. She is an active youth worker at the local youth centre where she nurtures, cares for, and supports young people in our community.

Rhonda is also an adult education trainer and assessor at Community College where each year she teaches classes in community services, self-development and workplace skills.

Rhonda's focus on wellbeing and welfare is what drives her to engage students in a dynamic, fun classroom experience that brings theory to life and allows them to emerge confident, empathetic and ready for the workplace.

“I love supporting and nurturing students who often begin their journey filled with doubt and low self-confidence, then during their time at college, grow and develop their life in ways they'd never imagined.”
