Inverell Student Steffi-Lee Frankland Wins Inaugural Adult Learners’ Week STAR Award
Community College Northern Inland (CCNI) is proud to announce that Inverell student, Steffi-Lee Frankland, has been named the first recipient of the Adult Learners' Week (ALW) STAR Award, presented at the official launch of Adult Learners Week 2025 today.
The STAR Award was introduced by ALW to celebrate its 30th anniversary.
When Inverell student Steffi-Lee Frankland enrolled in the Certificate III in Individual Support at CCNI's Inverell campus, she never imagined she would one day stand in the spotlight of a national award. Yet on September 1, at the official launch of Adult Learners’ Week 2025, Steffi-Lee was named the very first recipient of the STAR Award—recognising adult learners who shine as mentors to their peers.
For Steffi-Lee, mentoring isn’t something she set out to do but her encouragement of others has made all the difference in her classroom. Trainer Ean Muhs, who has worked closely with Steffi-Lee this year, describes her as someone who quietly but consistently lifts others up.
“Steffi-Lee has a natural way of helping others,” Mr Muhs said. “If I need to split the group, I can confidently ask her to guide half the students while I work with the others. She not only supports her peers but also lightens my load as a trainer.”
Ean recalled how Steffi-Lee’s outgoing nature helped a young student settle in:
“We had a school-based trainee in our class who was very nervous and extremely shy. She wouldn’t speak to anyone. So I partnered her with Steffi, who doesn’t stop talking,” he laughed. “Steffi really helped to bring her out of her shell. Now, wherever Steffi goes, she follows—sitting next to her, joining in discussions, and contributing happily. With Steffi by her side, she’ll take part in anything.”
Inverell Senior Campus Coordinator Tania Archer agreed, noting that Steffi-Lee’s industry experience allowed her to give classmates valuable support with practical skills such as manual handling. “Steffi-Lee is an inspiration to others. Her commitment to her own learning is remarkable, but her generosity in helping others succeed truly sets her apart.”
CCNI CEO Melanie Squires congratulated Steffi-Lee on receiving the award, which coincided with the 30th anniversary of Adult Learners’ Week.
“The STAR Award is a national award and Steffi-Lee is the only winner, recognised for her support and mentorship of fellow students,” Ms Squires said. “We’re very proud of Steffi-Lee and very thankful for her presence, which embodies lifelong learning.”
Following the announcement and presentation of her Award, Steffi-Lee was invited to cut a ceremonial cake, after which the audience joined together for morning tea — a fitting celebration of a learner who gives so much to those around her. The STAR Award is more than just recognition of Steffi-Lee’s generosity—it also highlights the spirit of adult learning itself. Adult education is about more than just gaining skills; it's about community, encouragement, and the shared belief that it’s never too late to learn.
Steffi-Lee will complete her qualification later this month, capping off a year of determination, resilience, and personal growth. Like many adult learners, she returned to study with both excitement and nerves. Balancing study with other responsibilities was never going to be easy but through persistence and with the support of her campus and trainer, she thrived. As CCNI celebrates Steffi-Lee’s achievement, the recognition also sends a message across the region: that adult learners are leaders, mentors, and role models in their own right.
Adult Learners Week is an annual celebration of lifelong learning, coordinated by Adult Learning Australia, the national voice for adult learning and community education. During the week of celebrations that took place during 1-8 September 2025, Learning Ambassadors shared their stories nationally to inspire others to take up new learning opportunities.
